Debt
I can’t afford what I’ve been given,
even this brief moment is too costly,
the long line of trees braided with bird flight,
a song of light carried in their feathers,
the lost ways and daily failures ending
in a waterfall and its tumble of second chances,
and you joining me there under the spindrift
shedding arcs of rainbow over us, and a pool
of minnows, glancing, darting in their silver
currents, this treasure of sleek enrichments
that flint the stream we walk by, all our lives,
like this, a rush of precious gems that glint
and disappear in the distant birches, while
beside us the stream never gets poorer.
